Math Rant

Reblochon, a soft, creamy French cheese, with fresh breads this morning.

I suck at math. I can do and understand math...it just takes me more time than some people. I have to really think about a complex problem...even talk it out to myself sometimes. Thus, homework is great. I have all the time in the world. Some problems I breeze through, others take me a bit more time to conceptualize.

That being said, I HATE GROUP WORK. We have a discussion section for my calculus class. Today, our TA made us get in groups and do a challenging worksheet. I had a smarty pants in my group that talked through the problem before I even had my head wrapped around step 1. It just confused me more and stressed me out. I'm a lone math person. I sometimes need to visit profs for office hours because they went too fast for me in class.

This is the only subject where I'm like this (well, except for my one attempt at computer programming).

It's frustrating, but I'll get through.

I love math. I love that DD is at an age where I can still help her - this will last through 10th grade, but then she's on her own.

I hate those math brainy guys who feel like they have to show their superiority by breezing through group problems. The whole point of a group should be to slow down and help the ones who need more time or explanation.

Last night I helped DD with her math homework and helped her friend via IM. It was fun. After DD finished, she took over helping her friend. I watched her do it just the way I was doing and afterward we discussed how you learn more trying to TEACH someone how to do a problem than you do by solving it yourself.

If the smarty pants was a guy, my guess is he's single and destined to be that way for a while. :-)

You need a tutor? I'm available... for a fee. *grin*

Foo to Smarty Pants. *rolls eyes*

Smarty Pants was a girl and stated "Math is my best subject." In my head I gave her a death stare.

How cute that DD has picked up your teaching methods, MTW.

Nutzy, I wish you could live with me during the semester.

It's been too long since I took a class to even sympathize...

DS will go to Jr Hi next year, so I'm sure I'll have to pull out some of those math skills again!

I hate the Group Work craze in schools! Granted, in business you must know how to work in groups because that's how pretty much everything business is done. But it's done that way because it's good for business. Group work is not necessarily good for general education, and is sometimes clearly not the best choice.

Also? (And this is more about younger students than adults like yourself) Too often the kids are not offered actual help in working through group dynamics. They are just tossed into a group to sink or swim. /rant.

I was never very good at math although I managed to do well on the courses I took. I got so frustrated because sometimes I could SEE the hole in the page, the place where you could just fall into mathworld which is kind of it's own fantastic universe. I could see the damn hole but I couldn't get inside. I am devoid of math intuition.

I agree with you, Swami. I never thought much about it, but instructors never really provide guidance to the group function.

*sits with Bravie*

I too hate math. I really see no need for all that fancy math, as long as you know the basics, right?

*just because*

Kim, I can be your tutor, but I don't know calculus. We'd still have fun, though!
