If anybody has any power of good kitty thoughts, we need some.
Bartleby was acting funny last night. Today it got worse, so we took him to the vet (not our usual one because they were closed). $450 later, they determined he had some "sandy" crystals in his bladder and needed to go to the emergency vet in Madison to get flushed out. Seemed fairly routine. Once he emptied his bladder, he looked much perkier.
At the E-vet, he was rolling around and letting us love him. The E-vet explained the flush and fill, with catheter, system and said we could get him tomorrow. Let's not even talk about how much that cost.
We just got a call. Bartleby has a leak in either his bladder or urethra. His urine is leaking into his abdominal cavity. It might not be repairable. We'll find out in an hour.
We need hugs.
Update: Make that another hour. Either a) It's a repairable tear, b) It's big and unrepairable and he'll have to be put down, c) It's either a or b and caused by the vet inserting the catheter or d) He has a defective bladder and will have to be put down

Oh No!!!! *super kitty good thoughts* *super human hugs*
I'm hoping for the best. *smooches*
hugs and smooches and lots and lots and lots of good thoughts.
As you all read on OT, he's probably going to be ok. He made it through the surgery.
Now, I'm drained emotionally and still a bit of a wreck. I'm worried about how he'll recover and am already fearing problems down the road. Not to mention worrying about how to pay for it all.
I need to go to bed. I'm exhausted. Thank you for all the good thoughts.
*hugs*
I understand being drained and worried. Just make sure to ask the vet about the causes. It could be something as simple as the food B is eating and will be easy to avoid. Also see if the vet has payment options like a payment plan.
I'm sure you already know these things but I also know that sometimes we can forget the simple things when we are stuck in a bubble of worry.
So glad that as of now, all is fine. I'm so sorry that you and Chris and Bartleby have had to go through this. *smooch*
I did a little Googling. And of course, each case is different. But in general, this is not totally uncommon. Everything I read said that the best prevention is through diet. Keeping the calcium counts low and the acidity of the urine high in order to break down the stones. It is also very common for most cats to get stones. Some pass them easier than others.
Thank goodness I finally switched my cats over to a cat milk instead of human milk. Whew.
Anyhow, it looks like after Bartleby recovers from the srugery that it will for the most part just be an adjustment in diet. Those will be thoughts being sent your way. Okay? *grin*
The POTI says that Bartleby is going to be okay but will have to stop eating pizza and drinking beer on Friday nights when left home alone. :)
My first cat Joel had crystals in his urine. Not sure if this is the same, but it was easily avoided by buying the food with low magnesium. At that time it was Science Diet or Iams. Nowadays you can add Eukanuba to that list.
So glad Bartleby seems to be on the road to recovery Kim! Extra hugs for you all!
*hugs* from the doggie world!!
Glad to hear the kitty will be well. Sorry to hear that you will be broke.
Thanks for all the info and love. We've started talking to peeps about diet changes. A friend recommended the Eukenuba special diet for this. For a month he's recommended to be on an even more tailored food, but then can go to a low ph food.
The vet is recommending we send his stones off for analysis. It's another $400, so we are putting it off for now. When we financially recover, we'll consider it. I'm more concerned with getting the other two cats checked out right now. That's high on my list in the next month, even thought it's not time for their checkup. I want to make sure it's not our water or something. With Chris's crypto a few weeks ago, I'm a little paranoid. We've got a water test kit, but it's hundreds of dollars yet agaon.
We were told to give our cat bottled water instead of water from the tap.
My Cleo has put in extra sleeping hours so she could dream of a healthy Bartleby.
By the way, don't you just love the bouncy Bartleby? I do!!
*big hugs*
Sorry I'm late.
