It's a snowy yucky day here, so let's have some cheesy broccoli soup to warm up. I'll even serve it in a bread bowl. Did I mention I've removed all the fat & calories?

I'm supposed to have a massage this afternoon (not sure if the snow storm will allow it). I've had a few massages before & am always unsure of how much to tip.

Here is how I usually tip for services:
Haircut at cheap chain-cut only-no shampoo or style: $2-5, depending on how happy I am with stylist/cut.
Pedicure: $5-6
Facial: $4-5
Newspaper lady: $5 every 3 months when I renew
Restaurant server: 15-25%
Bartender: $.50-1/drink, depending on where we are, what we order. Tap beers, average bartender, it's .50/drink. Mixed drinks, good bartender, it's easily $1 per drink, maybe more.

So am I cheap? I'd sometimes like to tip more, but we aren't exactly rolling in dough.

What should I tip for an hour massage? I usually only tip $5 for a half hour, $6 for an hour. Is that being cheap?

I think I was 25 before I realised you were supposed to tip the people who cut your hair. Who knew?

Thanks, bob. Now I don't feel so bad.

I always struggle with this one too. I don't want them to think I'm cheap, but I also never know what the "normal" amount to tip is.

*happy I never cut Bob's hair*

My standard rule is pretty much at least 20% unless I don't think the service is good. And coming from a service-industry background, you have to be pretty bad for me to not leave any tip.

I just got my hair cut yesterday. The owner cuts it. It costs $30, and I always give her $40. And I give her daughter $5 because she is the BEST shampoo gal in the world. I only get my hair cut 4x per year now.

I tip the paperboy at Christmas and give him $50. He's great. We never have a wet paper. Our guy at the old house sucked. So I didn't give him anything.

Hope you get your massage. I think I'm about due for one myself.

I want a massage.

It is 70 degrees in Texas right now. You should be here now instead of November.

Mmmmm! I may never leave your blog. Cheesy broccoli soup in a bread bowl? And no calories? You're stuck with me.

If you're cheap I don't know what I am. My stylist is the shop owner and I've heard that you're not supposed to tip the stylist if she's also the owner. I normally leave a twoonie. If she wants to give it to the shampoo chick that's fine.

I hate the whole concept of tipping. Like dickering over prices, I wish they'd just state one price and not leave it up to me to figure it all out.

Never had a pedicure or facial and the only massage I've had was with the massage therapist and I paid her enough so I shouldn't have to tip.

I always tip 15 - 20% at a restaurant and I can't remember the last time I was at a bar but I'm sure I tipped well there.

20% from what I understand.

I hate tipping for anything except restaurant service. I'd much rather just pay the price. Tell me how much to pay. i won't argue. Don't make me try to figure it out.

I don't tip my haircutter. She's an owner/operator, so I think she just raised the price to include the "tip". I just pay whatever she tells me it costs!

You're not cheap, you're in the midwest. I'd say you tip about what we do. Although I do tip my hairdresser pretty good right now, but that's because she gives me a deal on my color/cut and DD's color.

I have a question for everyone. If you tip all those other service industry people, where's my tip for doing your taxes? *holds out hand*

I just gave you a tip in Weltek's frozen dinner thread.

I don't know. I way over tip. I tip my hair girl $10 and she isn't even all that good. I usually tip my food service people about 30%. Bartenders I tip at least a buck a drink. I tip cab drivers about 15%.
I wouldn't know what to tip a massage person. *shrug*

I've settled on $10. I feel generous at $10 and I do this rarely, so I $10 it is.

It's funny, getting these spa things done requires so much prep! I had to shave this a.m., last night foot filed my feet so they are all soft and made sure I didn't have any big blemishes on my back.

However, I overlooked the fact that I wore shoes that soon need to be tossed due to feet smellies. Luckily I carry a mini can of oust in my purse for various reasons. I will spray my feet & shoes with that when I get there.

Boy Carey is like the moneybags around here. Just throwin' money left and right.

Once again I am like Boo. Which reminds me that it is time for another haircut. The massage sounds soooo nice!

Before I worked in the service industry I hardly ever left a good tip. After I found out how much servers make an hour is when I changed. If the service at a restaurant is good then I tip at least 20%, if it is not so good then 10%. When my haircutter cuts my hair, if I get a shampoo and my eyebrows done its about $40 and I give her $15 if she does well, if not then it is $5-10. When she is just cutting syrenboys hair it is $5.

My standard is 20% though. If the service is good. Around here and when I worked in Tn a server made roughly $2.13 an hour, haircutters usually rent their spot, and work on commission from service sold, and I would say the same is for massage peoples.
