My recommendations for lots of stuff

Have some gruyere & listen to my wisdom. :-)

Toothpaste
I've always been a Colgate Total fan...but now I'm into the flavored Crest. The orange is good. Now I must try the lemon.

Knives
I love my Wusthof, although there are some new brands hitting the market that appear equally impressive. If you are concerned about price, just buy three good knives: Chef's/Cook's Knife, utility knife, santoku knife. A good carving knife is also nice, but how often will you really use it. And I think a nice set of steak knives is also essential if you eat a lot of grilled meat. Don't buy wooden handled knives. Wusthof's Grand Prix collection has single-pieced, quality poly handles which are more resistant to wear & tear. KEEP THEM SHARPENED. Don't use those rotary automatic things either, they leave marks on your knife blade. Hand sharpen them, or better yet, find a professional to do it for you. Make sure they just aren't using one of those auto sharpeners. And finally, don't put them in the dishwasher. Your handles will wear quickly.

Cookware
For stainless steel, I recommend Emerilware. More comfortable to handle than All-Clad, IMHO, and half the price. I also have Emerilware non-stick & like it. I recommend more non-stick than stainless pieces for everyday cooking, but both are essential. When shopping for new cookware, go to high & low end stores...feel the differences. Find pieces heavy enough, yet that feel comfortable.

Sweet Tooth Cures
I'm watching my calories & fat, but will always have a sweet tooth. Here are my cures. A.M. sweet tooth: Funky yogurt flavors. Right now it's Banana's Foster. Another fave is Blackberry Creme. P.M.: Betty Crocker Low Fat Fudge Brownie Mix...make them in a smaller pan than 13x9 & you'll get yummier brownies. Another fave: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough pudding cups. No actual cookie dough, but cookie dough flavor. Other items in a pinch: Werther's and Salt Water Taffy in flavors like peanut butter chocolate & cookie dough.

I could never use orange or lemon toothpaste. Don't know why. My fave is the Colgate (I think???) 2 in 1. It's a blue gel. I must use gels and not pastes. Pastes leave an icky past in my mouth LOL. And, YES, I do know you are supposed to rince afterwards :-)

Very interesting info on the knives. I abuse my knives. I'd love to buy some good knives. I'm pretty happy with the ones I have, even if they are cheap.

I like the Calphon pots/pans. I'd love to be able to buy a whole new set but just can't bring myself to spend that much money. Don't know why. My mom used to always hate my pots/pans. Those were the cheapy ones I used to have. She always wanted to buy me a whole new set but I wouldn't allow her to spend the money.

Werther's really do the trick for me most times. I also sometimes buy sugar free chocolate chip cookies. Don't remember the brand name. DH and I also like the sugarless strawberry jello. That really helps curb the sweet craving after lunch.

Oh, and we don't eat chicken or meat at home so there isn't much use for good steak knives.

I use that 2 in 1 gel also, but it has "Total" on the label, so I just called it that. MMmmmm, cookies.

The orange is wonderful! I love the orange. It really doesn't taste orangy or citrusy. DO NOT try the lemon. It's nasty. NASTY, I tell you.

Okay, now I must go read the rest of your entry.

Okay, I have no real comments on knives. Or pots and pans. Other than I need a new set of pots and pans desperately.

Wusthof knives are fabulous! But expensive. I have a set of, um, a whole bunch. And 6 steak knives, and the Wusthof sharpening strobe, which I must be spelling wrong because it is not a strobe light it's a metal sharpening thing.

It took Mr. Swami a while to understand why (some years ago) I was spending $800.00 on a set of knives. When I explained what a great deal they were because they were marked down 30% he was not impressed.

I said I will use them for 40 years. He was unimpressed. I got out my 'heirloom' Wusthof BIG chef knife that my mother used for my whole life and then gave to me, and he was still unimpressed.

But I don't care. I love good knives!

Emeril does have the best cookware. Michelle bought some of the pots for my birthday and they are great.
