The Experiment

Somem Irish Dubliner cheese today! Tis the season.

If anyone talks to Jen or Glow on a regular basis, mention the cd thing to them. I don't think either of them are on blogs much, but both are music lovin' peeps and I'd hate for them to miss out.

I made my first bath bombs last night. They are interesting. Let's count my misteps.

1. I didn't buy powdered micas because they didn't have the kind I wanted at either of the two stores I bought stuff from online. I thought I'd start by using food coloring in small amounts (as many recipes I found did this). Unfortunately, there is almost no liquid in bath bombs, so it's hard to mix food coloring in. Plus, I didn't add much, so the bath won't be that pretty. I need to pony up for the powdered colorants.

2. I added too much water. You spritz it in with a spray bottle so the stuff doesn't foam up, yet is moldable. I spritzed too much, apparently. It was a great texture to put into the molds, yet when I unmolded them, they sat and began to slowly lose their shape. So I rolled them and stuffed them back into the molds overnight. This morning, they were expanded significantly (the added water started to react with the baking soda/citric acid mix) and now the molds are stuck on they don't look very nice! I'm going to try Witch Hazel and see if it reacts less, as one recipe suggests. And just use less moisture.

For a first batch, I'll chalk it up to learning. I don't love the scent either. I was trying to make it similar to bath and body works brown sugar & fig. It's close, but a little too sweet.

One of my bottles of foaming agent for the bubble bars seems to be adversely affected by the cold weather, so I'm not sure if it will work as is. I'm checking tonight. If it's ok, I'm hitting the bubble bar path. Wish me luck.

You are a brave soul for trying that on your own. Pictures! I think we need pictures!!!

Where did you buy the stuff from?

I wish I had the drive to do something like this. Lord knows I have the time, but nothing seems to hold my attention span if it doesn't have the words "potential job" attached to it. *sigh*

The Chemistry Store online is where I got most of the stuff. But most of that was for the bubble bars. Basic bath bombs only need baking soda, citric acid, coloring and essential oils. I got molds from Coastal Scents online. 2 c. of baking soda and 1 c. of citric acid yielded 5 medium sized bombs.

The bubble bars have a longer list of carp involved, but I love them most.

I bet I am the one who ends up with the mishaps, aren't I? Hrmph.
I'm going back to jump on the sofa.

I just buy stuff. It's so much easier!

The last non-typical thing I tried to make was root beer. Did you know that glass bottles can explode when things start over-fermenting? Well, they can.

Silly swami, you use plastic for root beer! Not that I drink that horrid stuff, but my niece and nephew do.

I needed a hobby. That's the only reason I'm doing this!

*giggle* please tell me you did mad scientist laughs while you were creating.... pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

No, but I promise I will tonight. I spent more time just laughing at myself in a non-manaical manner.

Nook Nook said you were asking for me and Jen. Sorry. Last I checked, you stopped blogging. Had I known, I'd have come running.

I have a quite a few songs that have reminded people of me for various reasons. I'll just start go with the ones that remind me of me.

U2’s “Acrobat” is probably the song I would say first. A friend of mine, long ago, said he thought of me immediately. It definitely fits and it reminds me of him… which is a good thing.
“I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And don't let the bastards grind you down”

Ani Difranco’s “Not a Pretty Girl” (blog title inspiration... obviously)
“I am not an angry girl
but it seems like I've got everyone fooled
every time I say something they find hard to hear
they chalk it up to my anger
and never to their own fear
and imagine you're a girl
just trying to finally come clean
knowing full well they'd prefer you
were dirty and smiling”

Ani Difranco’s “32 Flavors” exbf always said this one fits better
“I'm not trying to give my life meaning by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say
squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some”

Ani's songs are pretty obviously about being bisexual but there's alternative meaning in there for me. Love her.

Or you could always go with the song that everybody always seems to sing to me.
“Gloria” by The Doors
"Well, now that we know each other a little bit better,
Why dont you come over here
Make me feel all right"

I flove Ani Difranco's 32 flavors.
You are a brave soul...I made body wash.
I took baby wash (unscented), a pinch of salt, a little water and three escential, grapefruit, bergamont, and frankincense.
I wanted it to smell like Happy Hippy, and it does. I was so happy.
Now if I can find a creamier unscented body wash, I will have the perfect body wash.

kim (weltek) said...

Deb! I could make that too, now that I have the essential oils. Thanks for the cool idea! I'll let you know if I find any inexpensive unscented creamy stuff.

I'm going to dump this song-related comment here:

With all the skits & comedic wisecracks being made at ex-Gov's Spitzer's expense, no one has yet had the simple idea of playing Love Potion #9 in the background. Why is that?

Science was never one of my strong suits. But I do like to bathe.

I'm impressed with anyone who can make stuff and actually use it. I've gone through stages where I wanted to make candles, soap, jewelry, lotion...and it all passes because in the end? I'm too damn ADHD and lazy to pursue it.

Frankincense? What does Frankincense smell like?

And have you tried myrrh?

This whole idea of making bath products kinda freaks me out.
