This post brought to you by Visa.

*picture a serene, tree lined river, a canoe floating along on a sunny, mild day*

Bag of charcoal: $3

Case of beer: $16

Capsizing your canoe: $325

Priceless my aras. So, apparently I suck at canoeing on rivers where there are motorized boats. We capsized in deep water. Chris lost his $250 glasses and favorite bucket hat. I lost my sunglasses. We had to swim against current, pushing the canoe (there was no getting back in out there) to a sandbar. OH, and my niece was sitting in an innertube behind us. That added a lot of extra drag. But we made it to the sandbar. I realized Chris didn't check the Camelback (water backpack, for those unfamiliar) pocket before he put it in the canoe. I had my MP3 player in there from my Saturday walk. It no longer works.

On a brighter note, I picked a ton of blackcaps (like smaller blackberries) this weekend. I made a pie, and still have a huge bowl of berries leftover.

Ack!

How do you feel though? Besides pissed off. Do you feel extra worked-out? Sorry.

I will go and get some ice cream for those berries.

Please, everyone, eat some of these berries. They are indeed awesome with ice cream.

Boo, my arms feel super worked out (read: they hurt), and my legs were happy for the extra swimming workout!

Maybe it's just me, but is ANYONE else thinking "$250 sunglasses? WTF!?!?!?"

You're almost BEGGING for something like that to happen if you're wearing $250 sunglasses!

Alright, now you can tell me they're some extra special prescription glasses made with a special non-allergenic plastic that's hard to find. I'll feel embarrassed and slink away for a couple of days. ;)

I usually buy a $10 pair of sunglasses and then just throw them straight into the trash when I leave the store. It saves me all the time I'd spend looking for them on Day 2.

No no no, my sunglasses were about $12. Chris's REGULAR glasses were the $250 pair.

I love wild blackberries! I have some growing my my yard. Usually the birds decide they are ready one day before I do. :(

Major suckitude on the capsizing! (Always turn your bow into the coming wake, as I am sure you will always do from now on.)

When boating I always slow as I pass canoers - this is a very standard courtesy.

I have never capsized while canoing but I do remember trying to climb into a canoe from deep water (when I was first learning) and it is freakishly hard/impossible. You really need someone to pull you in.

Losing so much stuff would just make me SUPER annoyed. I am glad you can take it with such a good spirit! (They make little floats you can clip on your glasses you know. They look a bit dorky but they float your lenses.)

I am very glad the canoe floated! All canoes are supposed to have flotation foam built into the bow and stern so they do float but I have friends who swamped in the middle of a small lake and their canoe went straight down like an anchor - it was homemade and had no built-in bouyancy. Fortunately they were both good swimmers!

Heh, swami. The first time a boat went by, we just took it in the side. I was able to see the waves coming and shift my weight accordingly. The next time, we went head into the waves (the bow into the wake diagonally), which I wasn't prepared for and couldn't counter balance as easily. Sigh. I am a sucky canoer.

You could always make blackberry pies and sell them to get some money back.

I like it when MTW gets all homeboy on us.

Oh man that is the worst. We bought wave runners and always look out for anyone in your situation. Some people have total lack of respect and don't play by the rules.

OMH I would have been fuming!

Ok, I'll ask ... what the heck is a bucket hat???????

Hey MTW, my sunglasses are over $300. Yeppers. I won't be going canoeing with Kim anytime soon LOL.

Schnookie said...

And, the only reason I have a $300 pair of sunglasses is because I needed to use up my flexplan insurance money for last year. I'll never do that again.

kim (weltek) said...

Do you polish your sunglasses at night, Nookie? :-)

A bucket had is usually a cloth hat with a small floppy brim.

Fishermen love them.

This morning on one of the early morning talk shows, they talked about what to do if your canoe capsizes. You should try to get onto the capsized boat from the back of the boat.

Was there anyone at the lake or river who you could tell about the errant motorboat? Sounds like it was going too fast for the area it was in.

*loans kim glasses, sunglasses, MP3 player, life vest*
