If I were a religious person, I would credit God for the soft pretzel. But since I don't, I'll give props to Alton Brown, for giving me the yummiest pretzel recipe evah! Normally, homemade soft pretzels just kind of taste like bread in a pretzel shape. His pretzels have that special crust that tastes very pretzeley. The secret is in the boiling baking soda bath.
We are taking these to our friend's Oktoberfest party on Saturday, along with a black forest cake. It's the friend who started chemo this month and her DH was hit with H1N1 and still is low on energy. They want to have the party, but their plan to bake a bunch of soft pretzels wasn't happening. Thus, a few of us are bringing batches for them.
In other news, MIL thought she might die during her colonoscopy. She sent a letter saying "If anything happens to me, my journals are in the cabinet above the fridge." Um, ok.

That's interesting. I've never made homemade pretzels. Do you have a stand mixer? I want one but don't know if I'd use it enough to justify the space. Also, the brats? in Alton's picture does not look appetizing!
You're a good friend. I hope she's doing well and he's recovering quickly. Is everyone doing the same kind?
My MIL always reminds me where her jewelry is stashed. Journals would be more fun.
We used our stand mixer with the dough hook and it was perfect. I would definitely not give up my stand mixer, but we got the giant one (well, bigger than normal) and I'm not sure it was worth it. The power is nice, but I rarely use it to capacity. It's almost too big for a regular batch of cookies. I use it most often for breads and doughs, as you don't have to hand knead. It's also wonderful for whipping cream, and with cookies, you can start putting away and cleaning up as it mixes. A real time saver.
We aren't all using the same recipe, but something similar. We'll so how the different ones turn out!
What about parmesan pretzels? Have you had those?
Enjoy your visit with your friend. I'm sure they will be happy to see you.
Why don't you just go get those journals anyway? *evil grin*
Oh - I'd like extra spicy brown mustard for mine please.
I have had different cheeses in and on pretzels, including parm (my favorite is pepperjack). But, I figure I enjoy them plain or with mustard, which is healthier, so I should just stick with no cheese. *picks Boo's jaw up off the floor*
Yeah, it dropped again.
oH! I was wanting to make something sweet - but I think I'll do these pretzels instead! Yum!
Yahoo! Pretzels are made.. and they are yummy! My Bosch mixer bowl is a little large for that amount of dough, so I did a little hand kneading.. they turned out well and the kids liked them! I wish I had some sharp cheddar cheese sauce to dip them in!
Sometimes when you learn to make fun food like that you are forever spoiled from enjoying the kiosk/street food versions.
Glad you liked them, Amy! Funny story-we made a single batch in my large stand mixer (probably the same size as yours), and it balled up fine. When we made the double batch, it wouldn't ball up and we had to hand knead. I thought it was really weird, given that it's a large capacity mixer. Turns out Chris accidentally added 2 extra oz. of butter and didn't tell me. :-)
This is too close to baking for me.
Yuo and Chris are an excellent support team for your friend. She's lucky to have you..
Yummy food, good friends and some wobbly pops to go with the pretzels sounds like a good time.
