Doing Taxes

Have some thin shaved lacy baby swiss.

Tis that lovely time of the year when Chris sits down to do our taxes & flips out at the computer program.

Last year we paid for someone else to do them. That was nice, but pricey. It was our first year of taxes with the house and my Tastefully Simple biz, so we thought a pro was necessary. It was. Now, I can cheat & use their knowledge from last year to help complete my return this year.

Anyway, I sneakily started Turbo Tax yesterday. Chris pouted when he found out. I left the room to go find a document & he slid into the "operators" chair. *rolls eyes* Within 10 minutes he flipped out & swore his hatred of how Turbo Tax was set up. He gets frustrated so easily.

We haven't done state yet, but we estimate about $1200 back total between state & fed. Usually we get a refund for state and owe in feds, so it equals out to zero. This year we get a refund on both, so we'll have some nice bill paying money. Yay!

So, do you aim for a refund, or to break even? I never want to use the government as a savings program, but ideally I'd like between $500-1000 back. Otherwise, we cut it too close & might end up owing.

*grabs cheese* Yum!

We have an accountant and we usually get something back, but I don't "aim" for anything.

...and before you peeps start saying stuff about how a math professor has an accountant, ummm... tax laws have absolutely nothing to do with algebra, trigonometry and calculus. (Yes, I have had an ignorant student laugh about that one!)

*grabs more cheese*

Swiss is my favorite.

Turbo Tax is the best. This will be the 3rd year I am using it. It is even easier the following years because it fills in all your info for you except anything new you have to add on.

We used an accountant the first couple of years with the house but then did what you did. I just copied from his work.

We usually get back even though we try to get as few taxes taken out of our paychecks. We have tons of deductions from childcare to school tuition for DH Plus now that I work from home and DH has a side business where he does free lance we can deduct lots of stuff!

I like to get as close to zero but usually end up around $1500 combined state and fed.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM love swiss! *grabs a handful before Bob shows up*

DH uses Turbo Tax also. However, this year we are thinking of having someone professional do our taxes just to see if we are missing anything. Last year we had to pay over $1000. It was a shock. We then adjusted our pay taxes so we'll see what happens this year. We'd like to even out.

That's why I use TaxCut.

And I have always gotten a rather large refund due to the kids and daycare expenses and my teensy tinsy income.

I'm technically self-employed so I get an accountant to do mine. I used to do Dave's on my own (no software) but I've given up due to some labour sponsored fund investments that I have no idea how to claim. Last year my sister did Dave's. She's a CGA so I knew she'd figure it out. Not sure if she'll want to do them this year. She did it more as a favour last year. I may have to pay to get his done again.

Dave changed jobs last year so I have no idea what to expect. He used to get back enough to pay my taxes but I don't forsee that happening this year. I don't pay any all year so I pay it all in one lump sum in April. It sucks. Yet another reason why I need a new job.

I hate Turbo Tax. It always gives me an error because of a special form that we use. I think it's an 8396 form or something like that.
Anyhow, I do my own taxes by hand every year.
Except last year because I too had a private business to account for.
Not this year, thankfully.
I expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500 total back.

8396..Isn't that the gov't form for making sure you didn't marry your lesbian partner during the tax year?

Maybe Turbo Tax is liberal and doesn't support the 8396 form. In that case, I think you should be embracing Turbo Tax, don't you?

*giggle* You're on a roll today Kim :-)

I think the form is only a California form because it has to do with an MCC certificate that we got as first time homeowners. We get a 15% rebate on our taxes every year.

It's form 6971 that we must fill out proving that we didn't marry our lesbian partner unless they were a canine or a sheep.

I don't know if I will be getting much if any back this year. We will see. I haven't called my tax lady yet.

Gah Taxes!

I have to fill out Canadian and US taxes this year.

I think

Maybe

I got paid like $600 from my supervisor in Canada.

Oh, I don't want to think about it.

For the rest of the taxes, Mr Bob and I would pay no taxes all year (the university payroll was very useless and our salaries varied throughout the year) and save the money in a special account.

That made the tax cheque very painful to write out.

See, I'm so upset by taxes I didn't even eat all the cheese.

We use a pro, always. But she's our friend and we pay her in pasta and hashbrown caserole.

I used to do my own, on paper, before we got married. We always got money back when we were single. We got married in September 2001. And that year, we got nothing back because of how we had filed all year long. It sucked!

The last two years have been the best with the new house and Conner.

I don't necessarily aim for a refund, but I don't try to cut it close either. Michael works on straight commission, so his salary is never the same. It's better to be owed than to owe. Plus having money throughout the year, we spend it on nothing. But a refund is nice because we spend it on something nice.
