I may have grumbled about a committee I'm on before. I'm the chair this year (after last year's chair did nada), and there are four members. I can count on only one other member to regularly show up at meetings and help out. Another member, we'll call her Wilma, is semi-reliable. She'll take on a project, but is constantly in "exasperated" and "hurried" mode, so is present only at about 75% of meeting and is kind of spacy on communication. Other than Ms. Reliable, the other members are clinical instructors, so spend most of their time off campus and I rarely see them.
So a few weeks ago, Ms. Reliable was having surgery, but we were having a meeting. I was the only one that showed up for the meeting, despite me sending out the agenda with questions a few days beforehand. Nobody responded.
I sent out a message a few days after the meeting, saying we had an event coming up and I needed their input on the attached agenda. Nobody reponded but Ms. Reliable. Kind of strange "Wilma" hadn't responded to any of the messages. At least she responds to half of my messages usually.Today I found out "Wilma" was in a terrible car accident and broke her pelvis a few weeks ago. Now I feel bad that I was grumbling about her, as it may have even happened on the way to our meeting where nobody showed up. Can you even imagine having a broken pelvis?!

I can't imagine. Yikes.
I don't think you should feel bad. Believe me, this is something I have been really struggling with lately because of my co-worker. You have to look at it in two lights - the professional and the personal.
That sucks about your committee. I have one like that. I like it best when it is completely dormant.
We are going to draft a committee participation policy. Too many people get on this committee just to pad their cv, as university service is an expectation for promotion.
We kicked someone off of our Board of Directors last year for not attending.
At least you can come to unanimous committee decisions all by yourself.
I hope I never break my pelvis. That doesn't sound like fun at all
I second Breezy's OUCH and add a NO WAY!
Don't feel bad. You didn't know.
