Rewards programs

I would just like to share how much I hate rewards programs that have no "membership" card, and rather track your points by having you register credit cards/debit cards with them. JC Penny and Skymiles Dining are the two I've used. In the last few years, we have gone to usually using cash for most of our dining and clothing purchases, so there's no way (maybe there is, but I don' t have the desire to jump through the hoops of finding out) to continue to earn points unless I use a credit/debit card. Grrr.

Sure, I could use the card, then immediately put the cash back into the bank, but jeepers, that's a PITA.

I am starting to feel like all reward programs are just a big giant PITA.

Are you avoiding credit cards to control expenses? Avoid Big Brother spybots?

I use an Amazon Mastercard for almost everything because I get a nice monthly list of all the things I spent money on and because I love when Amazon mails me a $25 reward certificate that I use online almost immediately. Mr Swami uses a Cabela's Visa in the same way.

We are doing it to control spending. We don't have the discipline to pay it off every month. We do put gas on there for various reasons (convenience of pay at the pump, don't want to use debit at a pump), online purchases and then all the "bigger" purchases that are planned, even if we have the cash in the bank. It is a rewards credit card, but it's so much easier for me to stick to a budget for groceries and personal spending when I have a set amount of cash in my wallet each month.
