An American in Poutine Land (& Cookies)

Mild Brick for your munching pleasure today.

Let's talk about food. Most importantly, poutine. Nookie graciously indulged my curiosity about this bizarro product and I'm quite excited that I've lost my poutine virginity. Chris and I cooked up some homemade fries & a pan of poutine mix. I tasted the poutine before the fries were done & wow-it was probably the best gravy I'd every tasted-very flavourful. Then we put it on fries. *boggle* It was GREAT by itself, but can't say it enhanced my fry eating experience. Perhaps we need to go buy some cheesecurds (it is WI after all) and try the full poutine experience. This shall be on tap for the weekend. Of course, this is coming from me, who likes to dip my fries in BBQ sauce. <----freak.

Did you know a simlar version of this is sold in America as "Disco Fries"? I was reading online & found this little nugget. Never heard of them.

Cookies.
What are your very favorite cookies?
Do you make good cookies, or prefer to eat other people's?
Do you have a favorite place to buy cookies (bakery style)?
What is your favorite pre-packaged cookie (i.e., Oreo, Chips Ahoy, etc)?
Have you discovered the joy of baking with parchment paper?

I want to try poutine. *pout* I dip my fries in BBQ sauce too. *grin*
Favorite cookies are either snickerdoodles or Mrs. Fields, butter toffee. Either one will do.

I make a pretty kick ass chocolate chip cookie. If I do say so myself.
But I eat other people's cookies too. (in some cases that is code)
Mrs. Fields is my favorite cookie maker.
I don't really like packaged cookies because they are usually dry and crunchy. I like a moist, soft cookie.
I have cooked with the paper but I don't always.

You are here today! I just posted in your blog that I heard the weather is awful on the coast & many are without power.

Glad to have your opinion, cuz I have been wanting to try this. Maybe it will be an experiment this weekend. Now where do you find poutine mix?

Bravie said...

Yep. For some reason the power outages skipped over me today. For now anyhow. I forget how many thousands they said were without power. We've had some pretty high winds here the last couple of days.

I got lucky & found it in my mailbox. :-) Not sure if ANY U.S. stores sell it (unless maybe they border Canada). Maybe Cost Plus World Market or something has some.

Apparently you can order it here:

It's the St. Hubert's Sauce: Poutine.

*boggle* Carey went on and on about cookies and not one mention of Samoas. I.AM.IN.SHOCK

I want to try poutine too. I have a feeling I'd like it.

My favorite cookies are snickerdoodles. At least they are currently because I've been craving them.
I make peanut butter cookies for dogs. They seem to like them.

Ew. I really don't like poutine. I'm glad you do and all, but ew.

Cookie questions:

What are your very favorite cookies?
Jam Thumbprints. You make a stiff kind of batter, drop some on a cookie sheet, poke it with your thumb to make a little well. When they're baked and cooled, you put in a little jam or whatever you like. Nummy.

Do you make good cookies, or prefer to eat other people's?
I make pretty good cookies, so mine.

Do you have a favorite place to buy cookies (bakery style)?
Costco: the white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are so very good.

What is your favorite pre-packaged cookie (i.e., Oreo, Chips Ahoy, etc)?
I don't really like packaged cookies. Maybe the soft Chips Ahoy. I don't really like cruchy cookies, and most packaged ones are. Oh, wait! I really like those mint Girl Guide ones.

Have you discovered the joy of baking with parchment paper?
Yes, but only in the last 2 years. I love parchment paper. Why, oh why did I not use this before?

OH SHIT, I did forget the Samoas. How could I forget the Samoas.

Dear Samoas,
I am so sorry that I forgot about you. You are indeed the most divine of all Girl Scout cookies. I anxiously await your arrival every year. I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Your biggest fan

You are too cute Kim :-)

If you like the taste of the gravy, you can just put it in a side bowl and dip the fries in it. Or, pour the sauce over mashed potatoes. Yummy!

I'll be back later on the cookie question.

We had leftover poutine on mashed potatoes last night. MMMMMMM!

Cookes. I like many cookies. If I could only choose one from a tray of cookies, I would go for the cookie that's covered in chocolate. Or, a macadamia nut cookie. I also like oatmeal cookes and shortbread cookies. I buy chocolate chip because it's a cookie that both DH & I enjoy.

I do not bake so I would much prefer other people's cookies. However, I just recently baked some snickerdoodles (*waves to Glowie*) and I think they turned out ok.

Fave bakery type cookies: I love Mrs. Field's cookies but I don't know if we can buy them here. In Montreal, I used to love Mr. Norton & Felix cookies. OMH they were heavenly.

Pre-Packaged Cookies? I can't remember the brand name. I don't really go for the brand name, I just look to see who has the most chocolate chips in their cookies LOL. I try not to eat too many goodies, so I buy sugar free chocolate chip cookies. They are pretty good.

And, as I don't bake, I have no idea what parchment paper is.

Attention!!! Samoas will be in my house.... this friday! *hops around*

Nookie, when I make chocolate chip cookies, I use half flour and half ground oatmeal. I take whole oats and grind them in the coffee grinder until they are the consistancy of flour. It adds great volume to the CC cookie and adds a nice little flavor to them too.

I have poutine sauce mix in my cabinet from Coco. I bought some fries last weekend. I have yet to make it though. Maybe tonight. Of course, I like dipping my fries in BBQ sauce, too. And honey mustard. And Arby's sauce. I guess I'm a bigger freak than Kim.

I love chocolate chip cookies. They are probably my fave cookie of all time. Especially when they are still warm out of the oven with a big glass of milk. Mmmm! I'm not much on packaged cookies, except for those shortbread fudge striped ones.

Breezy, how much are GS cookies this year?

Schnookie said...

I've already gone through one box of samoas *giggle*

Momma, I paid $3.00/box.

Breezy said...

$3 here too. *smooch*

I make some damn fine cookies. Just ask Arkie, Coco and CSTL (although I have way perfected my sugar cutouts from when I sent him some.) Parchment paper is my saviour!

There is a place in Syracuse called Provisions and they make a killer cranberry oatmeal cookie. I still have yet to find a decent bakery in Albany that doesn't specialize in just cakes.

Right now, I would devour some fries with gravy.

I don't even want to get involved in the outine discussion! But cookies? I love cookies. I prefer anybody else's cookies to my own.

My very favorite ones are the dense chocolate ones with walnuts that I bought for Valentine's Day. Yummy beyond belief. I mostly prefer cookies with nuts, but I do lvoe a good Snickerdoodle!

Excuse me - I'm on a diet here and just reading this thread has me clawing the walls.

However, since you asked...

What are your very favorite cookies?
--Shortbreads.

Do you make good cookies, or prefer to eat other people's?
--I can make them but when other people do the cooking I don't have to clean up.

Do you have a favorite place to buy cookies (bakery style)?
--Mrs. Field's. I love the coconut & macademia nut cookies. This is just about the only place where I like coconut!

What is your favorite pre-packaged cookie (i.e., Oreo, Chips Ahoy, etc)?
--I like Pepperidge Farms Chessmen and Mint Chocolate Brussels.

Have you discovered the joy of baking with parchment paper?
--Oh heck, yes. It's been around forever.

For Swami-

This is one my favorite recipes. They are checkerboard shortbread cookies and have a real creamy taste due to the powdered milk in the recipe. YUM!

GAH! The link didn't work.

Here's the recipe.

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup (1 envelope) nonfat dry milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter or shortening, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
2 tablespoons cocoa

Sift together flour, dry milk, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and stir in vanilla. Gradually add sugar; beat until light and fluffy. Add well-beaten eggs, blending until smooth. Add dry ingredients and mix until well blended. Divide dough in half. Stir cocoa into one half, blending well. Shape each half into a rectangle, about 2" x 2" x 6". Tightly wrap in waxed paper. Chill at least 30 minutes.

Unwrap dough; cut each rectangle into quarters, lengthwise. Alternately place dark and white quarters side by side to form checker design. Rewrap in waxed paper and chill slightly.

Slice dough into 1/8-inch pieces and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 12 minutes.

Nutritional information: 420 calories, 13.8 grams fat, 4.2 grams saturated fat, 46 mg of cholesterol, 418 mg sodium, 71.0 grams carbohydrate, 5.4 grams protein.

They sound way more difficult than they are.

Look! A recipe from the 50s! *gigglesnort*

I think my mom made those all the time. Checkerboard cookies were very big back in the 50s.

I will try that recipe sometime, TK. Thank you.
