The busy weekend that wasn't so busy

We had two invitations for the weekend: my 15 year class reunion and a group camping trip. We chose neither.

Looking at the photos on Facebook of my class reunion, can't say I have any regrets. There are some people I'd enjoy seeing, but I couldn't rationalize a whole day of small talk with those I don't really care to spend time with. The "event" was a family picnic. Me not being a big kid person, wasn't too excited about that. In the evening, there was an informal gathering at a local bar. Haven't heard how that went.

Instead, we took Friday off (a furlough day for Chris) and went to Galena, IL. It was a nice little road trip. Lots of cute stores. A "charming" little town. Their new brewpub, which wasn't supposed to be open yet, had just opened the day before. It's like they KNEW we were coming. Unfortunately they only had two beers on tap and they weren't that good.

Saturday we went boating with Chris's brother and had a really good time. It was perfect weather.

Sunday we had lots to do at home. I made some refrigerator pickles (even though I dislike pickles, generally), froze carrots, made Karchita's OTCC recipe, did lots of laundry, did the weed trimming, swept the patio and packed for the 3 Day. Oh, we also watched Madagascar 2. Made me giggle.

So, I guess it was busy, but there was also a lot of relaxing.

Yay for relaxing!

I want to go to a reunion but at the same time, I don't want to.

I don't know if you saw it on OT, but I said that I would like to do a "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" tour with you and Chris. Maybe when I win the lottery . . .

I can't believe your walk is this week. That really came up fast. It will be awesome having Chris crew your walk. Do you guys get to share a tent?

Good idea-when either of us wins the lottery, let's do a DDD vacation! Chris's mom's little hometown of Cloquet, MN had a feature on there last week. Chris remembered going to Gordy's a lot as a kid.

I'm excited Chris is part of the 3 Day this year. Yep, we are sharing a tent. I have to sleep in the crew area, which will make me rise extra early. Super.

I like Galena. We went there for our 1st anniversary and went back a few times after that. We keep talking about taking a long weekend and taking the kids there but haven't done it yet.

Several of my facebook friends who were in the HS class ahead of me had their 20 year this weekend.

I bet Galena is beautiful in the fall. I'd like to go back for a more "romantic" night. We were hitting it during our dive bar tour, so we weren't exactly dressed for a fine dining adventure.

Chris is from Cloquet?

There probably would have been a ton of kids & maybe some dumb maternal attitude (iykwim) on display at the picnic - so good choice skipping that. Bet there would have been kids at the bar too, assuming it was in WI.

I have never been to a reunion. I just sort of wound up skipping them one a time. They were always very far away, which didn't help.

I dislike pickles too but I love to eat freshly picked, unpickled "pickling cukes." They are so much better than the 8" monsters we have to buy all winter. One of my favorite summer salads is just thinly sliced pickling cukes and tomatoes tossed in a fresh coleslaw dressing. Yummy!

Chris's mom is from Cloquet. Lots of that family still lives there. He visited a lot growing up.

I enjoyed eating the refrigerator pickles before they sat too long in the liquid. It's 70% pickling spices that make me a non-pickle eater. The simple refrigerator ones didn't have any yucky spices. The other 30% is that variable texture thing. I like my cukes very crisp and not permeated too much by liquid.
