What a difference an outfit makes

New clothes make me happy. I've gotten more picky about what I buy, only buying things that fit just right now, rather than saying, "Oh, it's a little big, but it's fine" or "When I lose 5 lbs this will be perfect!" We went to the outlet mall on Saturday and picked up a few things. Nothing really amazing, but decent stuff for work and casual. I'm more of a quantity over quality girl, so I'll buy three cheaper brand shirts instead of one Ann Taylor shirt. I'm able to keep my wardrobe more current this way. I only have four items or so that I paid over $50 for.

And I cannot fathom spending over say $60 on a purse. I'm not really a purse woman. Hence, I've been getting purses at TJ Maxx so I can get some nicer purses at cheaper prices. Chris thought all women drooled over the Coach outlet store. Meh. I'd rather spend money elsewhere.

What do you like to spend money on/what are you cheap about when it comes to clothes? Bonus: What is your favorite work or casual outfit?

I completely agree with you about the purse. Michael got so "offended" by my Target purses that he bought me a very nice brown one for Christmas either this year or last. It was in the $100 range.

I think I got an ink bleeder stain on it within a month. It's not too noticeable, but it's there. Plus, it's brown leather. I don't think brown leather goes with everything, but I am forced.

The other thing he got offended by was my Target diamond studs. I liked them because they were easy to pop on and off, and they cost $5. Oh no, he had to buy me real diamonds, which have screw backs. I hate screw backs.

I also agree with you on buying things thinking, "I'll get into it." I almost did that with a skirt last year and thought better of it.

I have been much better about holding back on purchasing stuff. I always make allowances for my standard Eddie Bauer white shirts. I don't like to spend $49 for pants, but I will do it, and the Eddies last.

I will splurge on a bathing suit (somewhat splurge - nothing over $80, which is still expensive for a bathing suit).

The only other mandatory must have at whatever cost is good running shoes. My shins won't allow anything else. I try to get them on sale, but I have spent $109 before. I wasn't happy, but I did it.

I will also spend money on good cheese.

I second good athletic shoes (unless you aren't doing much in them throughout the year). I don't have a problem spending money on those.

I need an outfit for the reunion next weekend. *sigh* I hate shopping.

Will never spend big money on a purse, bought one last week for the summer at Goodwill for $3.

My running shoes are the only thing I will spend big bucks on too.

Purse story - I got a Kathy purse at a garage sale for 3 bucks. It still had the 89.00 tag on it. Everytime my sis and I went out I got complements on it. She recently bought an Ed Hardy bag with his line "Love Kills Slowly" on it. I think she paid big bucks. We went to pay on her furniture and as we were waiting this older woman was trying to read Sis' purse. Kelley moved her arm to let her read it, thinking she was going to get a compliment. (You could tell by the gleam in her eye.) The woman got tears in her eyes after reading it and told Kelley she just lost her husband and her purse made her sad. It was sad, but afterwards I laughed at Kel for having "the purse that makes people cry."

I'm obviously really un-hip, as I have no idea what a Kathy bag or this Ed Hardy thing is.

I haven't a clue what those are either. Kathy, as in the comic strip Kathy?

I love to get new clothes, however I seem to never go out shopping. I love Ann Taylor but not her prices. There is an Ann Taylor Loft at the mall, but haven't been there in a while.

I do admit I love the pricey handbags. Don't know who Ed Hardy is, but I think Kathy is Kathy VanZeeland? (or somesuch). I have several Dooney & Burke that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. I have two Coach bags that I got for Christmas and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them, too. I don't imagine ever wearing these purses out--they'll probably last forever. In fact, I'll probably ask to be buried with them. *snort*

Oooooo! I just remembered that I ordered a new pair of Skeechers over the weekend. WOOOOOOT! They should be delivered by Friday.

I'm not into brands or "name" clothes or purses. However, I do go to a Skecher outlet store nearby...it rocks!

I love Coach purses. I admit it, I do. However, I only buy them at the outlet. I love them, but even I know that the prices are ridiculous.

I need pants to be "long" or "tal" length. For a long time I kept buying pants in regular length thinking that they would be okay. I'd try them on and scootch them down and they'd be almost-fine. Then I'd get them home and wear them and tealize that no,, in the course of normal wear they are too short. I've spent so much of my life in floods, and most of it before capris and cropped pants were "in."

So I have vowed to never ever buy regular, not-tall pants again. Ever.

I tend to go with quantity over quality, too. It's fine but I do think the clothes looks cheap faster than good quality clothes.

I hate dry cleaning.

I love Ann Taylor Loft. Some of my favorite pants have been from there.

Boo, I just bought my first pair of Eddie Bauer pants. Black. They were having a 40% off everything sale a few weekends ago.

Oh Frody, I love Eddie B. And they have a surprising good mix of casual and business clothing.

I had a doctor's appointment out by the mall today, but it was way too early to hit the store. I need some new white tees. All of mine are getting that yucky underarm discoloration.

I don't pay much attention to name brands because mostly they are just a price indicator to me, not a quality or desirability indicator. Lately I buy most of my clothes from dept stores, with Kohl's being a favorite of mine. So obviously I am not high maintenance (anymore.)

I buy a purse based on how well the pocket/compartment set-up reflects how to organize the things I like to carry in a purse. I think I spent about $70 on a purse once, but my favorite purse was probably about $20, 5 years ago. I love my purse! Everything is in the right & logical place!

I spend most of my money on casual shirts/tops, since I dress casually most often and shirts just never look good after being washed a number of times. So I have to buy new ones. I will not buy anything that has to be dry-cleaned!

My current favorite casual outfit is a pair of black palazzo pants with one of 2 tunic-length tops. One top is a batik print in golden browns. The other top is mostly rose colored but with the neckline and bottom bordered in an understated random print in greens, blues & darker rose. I select tops that I can wear one of my treasured necklaces with. Screw diamond studs, Boo (or not.) I just want a lovely necklace to wear. I like necklaces.

Like Frodis, I am fairly tall so I love love love that they are selling lots of tunic length tops for the past year or so. Maybe that's why I am buying so many tops. Like unintended highwater pants, unintended highwater tops are not attractive.

I also want to get a couple fo Maxi dresses. I love the t-shirt fabric maxi sundresses but I fell too old to pull that look off anymore. *sobs*

Swami, I like the tunic tops too. I just bought several of them on my "restock the closet" shopping trip a few weeks ago.

I'm not particularly tall, but I have long legs and a short torso, so the tunic shirts are great because they lengthen my torso a bit which makes me look a little more balanced.

My favorite outfit currently is a v-neck green and gold tunic top with beige capri pants and my brown sandals with the 2" heels. It's halfway between dressy and casual so it works in a lot of situations.

My favorite sharp work outfit is my black pinstriped Ann Taylor suit with pink pointy-collar blouse and my black shiny slingback shoes.

I am not happy with jeans right now. My favorite pair doesn't fit yet. The pair that does fit is a wee bit to short (I bought them before I made my no-regular-pants resolution) and I refuse to wear the maternity ones anymore (they're too big anyway.)

The Eddie Bauer pants have a wee bit of stretch so even when the last of the baby pounds go away (about 8) they should still fit.

I need the perfect work suit, Fro. Yours sounds like the one I need. Although I would get a colorful blouse underneath. I have determined color is good for me. I wouldn't wear it as an everyday work thing, but I do have several presentations and such each year where it would be handy. I just have to convince myself to set aside the money to buy one.

I also agree with you that cheaper clothes look "worn" faster. Good excuse to shop for trendy new things. :-)

Swami, sometimes I'm with you, but not on the maxi sundress issue. I think they are funny looking on anything but models.

I think I almost got bit by the purse habit as a teen, but glad I dogged it. I have so many other vices to spend money on. :-)

Ann Taylor Loft. They have a lot of sales, and you can usually get a nice suit for $150 or so. That's a lot, but the suits are lovely. I have three from there, the aforementioned pinstripe, a gray, and a plain black. I think I have 14 suits total but the Ann Taylors are ranked #s 1, 2, and 3.

I had to google Maxi dresses. I don't think that style works for me. I think it would make me look short.

Maxi Dress is an unfortunate name. It brings to mind femenine products.

I love purses but I tend to just use the same one over and over again.

Speaking of outfits - I am so going to order some of these for the summer.

What a brilliant idea!

MC, those are so cute. I'm not sure if I have the "back" for those, but I love the idea.
