Rummage sales vs. Donations

I'd better serve something light today since I was a snackmaster yesterday & ate more than I should've. Feta is one of the lighter cheese, so we'll have bruschetta with feta cheese sprinkled in.

My SIL made $900 in a two-day rummage sale last weekend. Yes, they actually DO have that much junk to get rid of. So much, in fact, they are having another one this weekend.

I don't have rummage sales because we live in the country. Not many people would come. And I really don't have that much stuff. I have clothes and old media (books, cds, movies). That's about it, other than a few random kitchen items here & there. Thus, I take a box to Goodwill every three months or so. I get a tax deduction and it's immediately out of the house.

So which do you prefer to get rid of stuff: rummage sales or donations? Or do you prefer to let the junk stack up in piles until you die? Do you like to SHOP at rummage sales?

I prefer to give it to charity. The garage/rummage sale is too much trouble what with cleaning the garage (in case of rain), tagging the stuff, organizing the stuff.

I don't shop garage sales because I don't have the patience for it. A coworker gets such good deals, but the one I choose to stop at will have all junk.

I need to clean my closets!

We had to have a yard sale last month to get rid of some large items because we are moving. We actually did great. Sold everything but our books. We ended up bringing four boxes of books to Goodwill.

I would never sell clothes at a yard sale and often wonder why peeps do that rather than giving them to charity. I suppose if you have a lot of baby items it might be worth it.

I always want to go to yard sales but stop myself because like Lasann, the yard sales I end up going to literally have junk. I've never bought anything from a yard sale.

I donate because I am too lazy for a yard sale.

What is this? *scrunches up nose* *flicks feta* *looks for leftover cheddar*

I hate, hate, hate doing garage sales. My DD (the one in college) loved to do these though, so we would let her have garage sales and keep the money for whatever trip she was embarking on or for college or whatever.

It's true, you can usually do pretty well a couple of times, but then all you have is the crap that you can't even sell at garage sales.

We used to give a lot of stuff away to charity because they came by regularly, but since we moved (almost 4 years ago) that has slowed drastically.

I like shopping at garage sales but never do.

We do both. We just had a garage sale a few weeks ago and just yesterday we donated a few bags of stuff to Parca.

I had a thought recently about selling clothing at rummage sales. When we had family rummage sales, clothing was usually priced $1-$3, depending on the piece. I recall having to haggle with people over prices. they were rarely willing to pay over .50 for clothing. I figure it's a huge bargain now. Even items at Goodwill are at LEAST $2 for crap.

I've had a couple, they're lots of work.

I love going rummaging! We do it all summer long.

I prefer just boxing it up, and taking it to Goodwill. Yard sales are too much work, IMO. People show up while you're still setting up, you have to haul all the crap out and put it out, then haul whatever didn't sell back in, and the "customers" want to haggle with you to get the price down from $.25. What's up with that? It's a damn quarter! No, I'm not going to sell you the item for ten cents! I paid $50, never wore it, and I don't thing $.25 is too much for an asking price!

I don't shop at rummage sales because one, I have issues with wearing used clothing (had too many hand-me-downs as a child), and two, because of my size, I'm not going to have much luck finding anything anyway. Arkieboy likes going to rummage sales and bringing home other people's junk. He got that from my dad.

My mom is a garage sale junkie. She can't stop shopping at them, and even buys things "to sell" at her own. *rolls eyes*

I give most away to charity (they call every other month or so to ask if I have anything) or I give stuff to friends, especially kids clothing.

Yard sales are alot of work, and in the end, you either have to keep what didn't sell, or give it away anyways. If it weren't for my mom, I'd never mess with doing another one again.

I have never had a garage sale and I never will. I do NOT want a bunch of random people milling about in my yard.

When the kids were little I would sometimes stop at one and let the kids run amok for 15 minutes while they picked out some useless toy for 50 cents or less.

I take stuff to Goodwill, give it to my DD to give away to her starting-out friends, or just toss it. Slightly embarrased that DD's BF's mom now has my old sofa in her basement family room.

Donations. Definitely.

Depends on what I've got, really. I haven't had a rummage sale in a few years, not since getting rid of the last of the baby stuff. These days, I take it to the local United Way or give older clothes that are still in good shape to friends with younger kids.

I do occasionally shop garage sales or rummage sales. Depends on whether or not it looks like it might have something to offer.

OMG how did you know I love this stuff? OMG that's so good.

Um, oh yeah...what do we do with old stuff?

We donate it. I shop at Value Village (Goodwill), but not at rummage sales. I like donating stuff because it makes me feel useful and, as you say, it's out of the house.
