I'm not really OCD about much. When I throw parties, I kind of obsess about stupid things like straightening pillows. Otherwise, meh. However, another example hit me in the face yesterday. Summary of the conversation:
Coworker: Do you or Barb like to pick out food for meetings? I have to choose appetizers and desserts for a meeting of faculty after work hours and am not good at these things.
Me: YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Coworker: Here's the menu, here are the meeting details, a meeting will occur while they are eating, blah blah blah
Me: pecan chicken fingers could get soggy, the shrimp looks too extravagant in these tough fiscal times, about eight of these choices involve crunchy and/or potentially messy things that can be embarassing or distracting during the meeting, the artichoke and crab dip is too rich for this crowd, the andouille cajun fritters too meaty and fried for this crowd, and the beef is probably not a great choice for the 16:2 women to men ratio in this bunch. That leaves about six apps to choose from, and you want three. Here is my first suggestions, as they pair well together, here is my second combo choice....etc.
Coworker: Wow, you really put a lot of thought into these things.
Me: I admit, I can be a little obsessive.
I bet Frodis can appreciate this, as I recall her enjoyment of planning the baptism meal last year.

I like the sound of all the appetizers you rejected. May I have those? I don't mind greasy fingers because I know how to wash, and I won't be at the meeting to contaminate your work environment.
What 3 did you pick?
I agree, the rejects sound tasty, but can you see my logic?
I recommended chicken sate, thai marinated veggies and a fancy cheese and cracker/bread try. Cheese and thai don't really go together, but it's WI...we love cheese.
My second choice was a mushroom tart, cheese tray and fruit. Tried to balance the rich with something lighter.
I work in the film industry. Picking out food is a requirement and the only rule is - no pork.
Lots of Jewish folks in the film industry.
I love picking food and I agree completely with your logic. Especially smart to consider the women:men ratio.
I'm still triumphant that the tilapia was the #1 best seller at Jeff's party. :)
I think your choices sound perfect. Personally, I'd like to eat some of those andouille cajun fritters (but not at a meeting.)
I have to go to DC a few times a year for a meeting and they always serve lunch. Since I end up doing a lot of talking at the meeting and they like to talk through lunch, I'm much happier when lunch has bite-sized elements so that I don't have an entire room full of people staring at me and waiting while I gnaw off a piece of sandwich, dribble crumbs down my front, and then try to chew really fast because they're all waiting for me to say something.
The best lunch they ever had was cuban food. It was a little messy but from a flavor standpoint it was amazing.
Was it wrong of me to read "cuban food" and think of food cut in little cubes to make it easier for eating and speaking?
That would be cubin' food.
I hope to eat some Cuban food today (I'm in Miami). Right now, Chris is set on heading out this a.m. for Moons over My Hammy in Miami.
The food we get at work is never fancy...too many finicky eaters. One coworker will only order chicken fingers when we go out, and will not go with us when we do Chinese. *rolls eyes*
I miss cuban food, especially cuban sandwiches. One of the many good things about living in Tampa was the cuban food.
I love food planning. It is the one part of my job that I will never, ever, ever, ever relinquish to my assistant. I agree with your choices. I had a big event last week and, as much as I wanted to do the Slow-Roasted BBQ Ribs, I knew I couldn’t. It was the one event I could have and should have done shrimp, but I didn’t want to blow the budget. Turns out I ended up with a lot of extra money in the budget after the fact, so I think we’re going to end up with a lot of beer.
I got major kudos a few months ago because we had a board meeting here, and I changed my catering company. They have a great salad that I ordered as a side. But the bigger points came because I ordered sweet tea! I used them again for a class and got major kudos for having Brunswick Stew as a side.
