Things I miss

It's been almost two weeks that we've been gone. Sunday I start my conferences. :-(

So what do I miss about home/the U.S.?

Regular coffee. While lattes, cappucinos, caffe americanos are ok, I do miss sitting down with a full pot of coffee in the morning.

Eggs. For breakfast they generally have bread, butter, jam and coffee. Luckily a few places have also had yogurt. The good news is, there's almost always some kind of cake or cookie, and I love a country that has cake and cookies for breakfast. This morning we skipped breakfast at our seaside lodge, as we were traveling early to Genoa. We knew we'd be passing a McDonald's about 15 minutes into our trip and planned to stop in for breakfast. I was looking forward to something egg related. Instead, they had nothing of the sorts. Only pastries and various coffee items, and not staff working the counter in sight. Boo, maybe you should go whip these European McDonald's into shape.

Normal dinner hours. Eating at 8pm almost every night sucks.

Wash cloths. You get these giant towels-bigger than our hand towels. Handscrubbing my face doesn't get it fully clean, so I end up making a big mess with these giant towels that are similar to the "tea towel" material we use for some lightweight dishtowels in the U.S.

I know, wah, wah, wah. Miss you all!

I was hoping you would be missing us.

Very interesting. I gave up on McDonald's long ago, but that does surprise me. I think I need to google this.

I too would also start to miss eggs.

I'm glad you're having such a great time. Your pictures on FB have been incredible. There are several I would love to see framed in your house somewhere.

Hurry the heck home.

Oh, and don't worry, you're not missing any great football - unless you're a Redskins fan. And then you're just barely missing death every week from a heart attack.

We miss you, too. I can hardly wait to hear more details about your adventures. Ohhh, I haven't checked facebook yet. I never remember to do that. I always think I'll lose weight on a vacation, but I always gain a couple of pounds.

I would be shaky all the time eating all carbs and no protein at breakfast!

You are missed! Safe rest of your trip.

I would miss coffee like crazy too, but I think I could deal with cookies for breakfast every day!

Ack! Do NOT eat in McDonald's! Why for?

I hope your conferences go well!

I am having a hard time feeling sorry for you. :)

I could easily be european with those types of breakfasts. I'm surprised you haven't had a selection of cured meats, though. I was in heaven when I was in Munich and could make breakfast out of a few rolls, a few slices of meat, a piece of cheese, and coffee. Mmmmm.

I could also easily eat at 8pm every night. I practically do, as it is, since I usually finish off my of my dinner after the kids go to bed.

Have a great conference!

Oh, there have been plenty of meats when the "breakfast buffets" have been presented at hotels. A ham sammie for breakfasts just isn't my thing, though. I need an egg. There are sometimes powdered eggs, but not the same.

I'm in Rome in a spartan conference hotel (pun sort of intended). I'm used to rather posh conference hotels, so this is odd. It's like dormitories with private bathrooms almost. The location is terrible (the hotel area isn't on any maps, including the ones offered at the front desk) and the food is terrible.

I consider myself relatively understanding and flexible in terms of travel, but for ths price this is a bit crazy. A crosswalk by the hotel seems reasonable, don't you think? When it's a mile walk to the nearest metro station, a crosswalk at least would be nice, not to mention a sidewalk.

Went to visit a Picasso special exhibit in Rome today. I think Rome could be done in a few days, and then I suggest getting out of town. Other than the main sights and history, color me not impressed. There is another Italy that is more beautiful and polite.
