It's supposed to be in the 70s today. Yay! Tomorrow is supposed to be nice, too, which is good because we are renting a chipper and decimating the pile of branches on our property. We have an oak blight that has destroyed trees in the woods, resulting in Chris having to buy new chainsaws!
My niece and nephew (13 & 14) are coming to earn some moolah and help us drag branches into a pile. I'm proposing $10/hour for their work. Chris is being evil and says we should introduce them to piece work.

HAHA - I agree with Chris - piece work is the way to go. You'll have to come up with some sort of graduated branch sizing though, in order to determine how much each piece is worth.
Geez, it almost sounds like I put too much thought into that.
We're in for some wicked weather this weekend too but will be psending it tiling the bathroom. We'll just have to work in a bunch of beer breaks.
We gave our nephew an hourly rate for something, and he stretched it out and didn't do a great job.
And yes, MC, you did overthink that. LOL.
My kids got an estimate of how long it would take, multiplied by a resonable hourly rate, with cash at the end of each day. Kids will stretch hourly out forever!
I have a huge yard (but not as big as yours) and have done many tree branch drags after a storm with a downed tree or two. It goes surprisingly quickly.
So you're going to have a mountain of mulch? Wheeee!
We're doing more limb duty this weekend also. If it doesn't rain.
I agree with estimating how long it should take and allowing that much. Heck, it may speed them up and you may have it done in half the time.
I'll come and help. I always wanted to shred trees.
10 bucks an hour??!!!
Can I come work for you?
We had to lose our bestest tree because it got the blight ( we think) , still 2 more that need removing. Poor yard.
At least you guys can use the firewood up there, we had to pay to have the tree hauled away.
I dedicated a blog post to you!
( Oh and MClown made me laugh with her over-thinking the branch size thing)
We didn't tell the kids how much we were paying, just that it would be based on their effort.
Might be $10, might be $30. They both put in a good 3 hours of work, so we gave them $30. They seemed happy.
I remember my grandma giving me more money than she should for doing chores, and remember how awesome it was. I want to do the same thing for my niece and nephews, since we don't have any kids. And I know they are saving their money and pooling it for a Wii, all with their own cash. I think it's awesome they are working together and not expecting it from mom & dad. So were we generous with the amount of cash? Yeah, but we are Aunt & Uncle and can spoil them, especially when they did work hard.
After spending ALL freaking day cleaning up storm debris I think those kids deserved more. I hurt from the roots of my hair to my tippy toes. Ugh. Yard clean-up is hard work!
